Abstract :
Activated carbons (ACs) have been prepared using chestnut, cedar and walnut wood shavings from furniture industries
located in the Comunidad Auto´noma de Extremadura (SW Spain). Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) at different concentrations (i.e. 36
and 85 wt.%) has been used as activating agent. ACs have been characterized from the results obtained by N2 adsorption at 77 K.
Moreover, the fractal dimension (D) has been calculated in order to determine the AC surface roughness degree. Optimal textural
properties of ACs have been obtained by chemical activation with H3PO4 36 wt.%. This is corroborated by the slightly lower
values of D for samples treated with H3PO4 85 wt.%.
