Abstract :
In line with that of mainstream education, research in Applied Linguistics and its pertinent fields has witnessed an evolutionary progress in terms of methodological assumptions throughout its history. In fact, as a microcosm of mainstream education, research in such fields more or less has been informed by research advancement in social sciences. Nonetheless, this progression has never been in a linear fashion in which whereas one tradition stops, the other starts thereupon. Notwithstanding different methodological standpoints have been adopted by researchers in the past decades, the vicissitudes of gaining acceptance have turned out to be a challenge for each tradition. The current status of research in Applied Linguistics and its relevant domains such as TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) in terms of the researchers’ methodological assumptions will be discussed in this paper. This commentary will examine the concept of ‘evidence’ and its status and will call for further investigations into the current status and the future direction of research in areas germane to Applied Linguistics.
