Abstract
Preliminary results for a volatile organic compound (VOC) sensor based on surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) are described. The sensor is comprised of a SERS substrate mounted on a thermoelectric cooler (TEC). The SERS substrate is chemically modified with a thiol coating that prevents oxidation of the roughened silver surface and attracts the analyte of interest to the SERS surface. Using this sensor, detection of chlorinated solvents, aromatic compounds, and methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE) is demonstrated.
