Abstract
This study is to analyse the mechanism of shear and yarn slippage of fabrics on the basis of the previous experimental work. A typical plain-weave fabric in a bias extension state is considered. A series of tests were conducted to characterise basic yarn/fabric properties. The analysis in this study consists of two parts. Firstly, a uniform shear state of the fabric is considered and the relationship of shear force vs shear angle is established. The predicted values agree well with the measured results. Secondly, a non-uniform shear state is explored and the manner in which a change of the shear angle could affect the yarn slippage is indicated. It is shown that for a fabric having yarns with high bending rigidity such slippage could be significant. In the analysis both beam-deflection theory and finite element methods are used.
