Mode-locking in a periodic array of scatterers

The classical dynamics of electrons in a uniform magnetic field, a periodic potential, and an effective friction force is discussed. In the regime of nonlinear response to an external electric field, we find that the dynamical phenomenon of mode-locking becomes important, causing Devilʹs staircases in the magnetoresitance and a complex phase diagram.
