Abstract
We discuss the origin of the Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations (SdHO) that are observed in the magneto-resistance of strongly open quantum dots at magnetic fields where the Lorentz force on the electrons allows them to undergo cyclotron motion within the quantum dot. Similar to the discussion of this effect in two-dimensional electron systems, we find that the properties of the SdHOs in the dots are strongly affected by the presence of disorder, which serves to provide coupling between bulk- and edge-like dot eigenstates. As an example of this behavior, we present the results of studies of the SdHO in InAs open quantum dots.
