Abstract :
This article focuses on installations where a switchrack should be considered. A review of switchrack design and typical applications for installation in hazardous locations is presented. A switchrack is defined as an assembly of circuit breakers, motor starters, panelboards, transformers, junction boxes, or similar equipment mounted on a freestanding metal structure. The focus will be on the advantages, both in cost and time to completion, of switchracks compared to site-built substations and prefab buildings. The design information is provided to illustrate minimum requirements for the manufacturer to take a one-line diagram and provide an accurate design and trouble-free finished product. Experience with installation and commissioning switchracks in hazardous location along with maintenance requirements are provided. Basic safety issues are presented with added emphasis on installation in a classified area.
