  • Abstract
    The optical absorption spectra of γ-irradiated cyclohexyl bromide at 77 K in glassy methylcyclohexane matrices have been studied over the wavelength region of 190 to 820 nm. Hole and electron scavengers were used to determine the charge of the absorbing species. It was found that cyclohexyl halides, typically thought of as electron scavengers can also act as hole scavengers. The absorbtion at 388 nm has been assigned to the cyclohexyl bromide radical cation C6H11Br+ and the absorption at 588 nm to the dimer radical cation with two-centre three-electron bonding between heteroatoms.
