Abstract :
A numerical/experimental study was conducted to investigate the failure pressure of filament wound composite tubes subjected to internal pressure. A progressive failure analysis was performed using ABAQUS (version 6.7) commercial software employing an alternative damage model implemented by the user subroutine (UMAT). Four thin-walled E-glass fiber epoxy tubes with different wind angles were produced and tested for the closed-end loading condition. Unlined tubes were initially tested to obtain the leakage failure and then lined with PVC tubes for burst failure pressure. The tests were conducted in a high pressure system specifically built for this work. Numerical and experimental results were compared and showed good correlation for all fiber wound orientations investigated.
