Abstract :
Solid particle erosion wear is the progressive loss of original material from a solid surface when discrete solid particles strike on the surface. Material removal process involves energy transfer i.e. kinetic energy of the particle is partially or totally transformed into strain energy in the material under impact. This work presents first of its kind, a mechanics based mathematical model, developed for predicting erosion wear rate. The model also presents first of its kind authentic results based on a particular shape and physical dimensions of the erodent particle. Erodent particle strikes at different impact angles, so the effect of horizontal as well as vertical component of impact velocity is taken into consideration to find out the erosion wear rate. Rigorous analysis is performed under conditions of different physical dimensions of erodent particle, and how it affects the erosion rate. The model is validated using matlab code and taking extensive data from literature.
