Abstract
In this paper, yield locus was measured for Ni3Al-based intermetallic alloy sheet samples, which were directionally solidified in [0 0 1] orientation. The yielding behavior was measured in both biaxial tension and biaxial compression. Significant anisotropy and yielding asymmetry between tension and compression were found. In order to model the complex yield behavior of the Ni3Al-based alloy, a new yield criterion has been proposed, which is based on the one given by Barlat and Lian. Finally, the predictions of the new criterion and several other existing yield criteria were compared to the experiment data. Results show that the new yield criterion can predict both the anisotropy and yielding asymmetry of the alloy with good accuracy, whereas other criteria lead to significantly discrepancies in biaxial compression region. Therefore, the new criterion can be used to study, at a low degree of complexity, the complicated yielding behavior of Ni3Al-based intermetallic alloys.
