The development of the title discipline is briefly summarized, and the general topics of the articles in this issue introduced. Definitions are proposed for the terms ‘fluorous’, ‘fluorous medium’, ‘fluorous separation technique’, ‘fluorous tag’, ‘fluorous reaction component’, ‘fluorous reaction’, and ‘fluorous chemistry’.
