Changes in microstructure, texture and residual stresses on the surface of a rail resulting from friction and wear

The rolling surface with a band containing disjointed white etching layers on a worn railway rail is studied by using X-ray and synchrotron radiation. The structure, texture and the residual stress on the rolling surface of the rail are determined. The results are discussed with respect to the distribution and the evolution of these microstructural parameters.
