Abstract :
We discuss the nature of the bond-breaking process in adhesion of small-sized bodies. We show that when the size of a block becomes smaller than a characteristic length lc, the bond-breaking occurs uniformly over the nominal contact area, rather than by crack propagation as is (almost) always the case for macroscopic bodies.
