  • Abstract
Abrasive wear testing using the ASTM G65 test is often used to simulate wear in different applications in cement, mining and earth-moving industries. As an alternative, a newly developed compression-twist (CT) test can be applied to simulate abrasive wear at higher contact pressures than the ones of the well established G65 test. Using different tool steel and cast iron materials, the ASTM G65 test and the compression-twist test are compared. Different wear mechanisms are determined for the two tests and correlated with the microstructure of the various materials. The increase in contact pressure by the CT test is the origin of the change of wear mechanism. For both wear tests, but for different reasons, the results show that the most wear resistant material is a powder metallurgical tool steel which has a dense distribution of small and hard carbide phases.
