Abstract :
As a result of the analysis and correlation of the accumulated experimental data, and also the analysis that has been made of the processes and phenomena taking place in the cutting of the metals, and the application of the previously developed structural/energetic theory of the wearing of materials, we approach in a new way the physical meaning of the parameter that is known as the chip shrinkage factor and create the bases for its analytic/experimental determination. On the basis of the newly proposed structural/ energetic model of the service life (wear resistance) of the cutting tools, it is now possible to develop accelerated analytic/experimental methods and engineering techniques for evaluating their relative service life on the basis of the energetic criteria, characterizing the specific energy content of the tool and workpiece materials.
