Abstract
The positive effect of bacterial cell immobilisation on the performance of biological nitrogen removal was demonstrated in three different cases. Selectively cultivated nitrification or denitrification bacteria were immobilised using proprietary Lentikats Biotechnology in a porous hydrogel matrix made of polyvinyl alcohol. The biocatalysts were used for nitrogen removal from various types of industrial wastewater, i.e. wastewater with high salinity (brines) or high concentrations of toxic compounds (diphenylguanidine manufacturing, uranium mining residues). The cell immobilisation resulted in an increased robustness of the nitrification and denitrification cultures towards unfavourable operational conditions.
