Abstract
Infrared spectroscopy has been used to study interactions between acetone and the carbon surface before and after the sorption of cations (Ni+2, Cu+2, Cr+3). Acetone has been used as a probe for the detection of Lewis acidic sites on the surface of carbon supported catalysts. Infrared spectra of acetone adsorbed on oxidized carbon films show that this molecule can both physisorb and chemisorb on the surface. The interactions of Ni+2, Cu+2 and Cr+3 with surface acidic oxides was followed by IR spectroscopy. The catalyzed increase in the degree of carbonization of carbon films by metals (Cu, Ni, Cr) is accompanied by a strong increase in background noise level in the short-wave region of the IR spectrum.
