Ternary GICs containing sodium associated with chloride, bromide and iodide ions have been synthesized by heating graphite with liquid sodium in the presence of NaCl, NaBr, and NaI in solid or liquid state. Similar ternary compounds could not be obtained with NaF, but quaternary phases G–Na–I–F and G–Na–Cl–F have been synthesized.
