Abstract :
We review recent spectroscopic studies of the ionosphere of Jupiter. These demonstrate the importance of the H3+ molecular ion in understanding not only the ion-molecule chemistry of the jovian upper atmosphere, but of its energetics and dynamics as well. Comparisons are made with a new three-dimensional, global circulation model of Jupiterʹs ionosphere and thermosphere, JIM.
