Abstract
Properties of planetary atmospheres and surfaces can be derived from radiation measurements either performed in an orbit around the planet or at ground-based stations. A Multispectral Atmospheric Retrieval Software (M.A.R.S.) has been developed which is based on radiative transfer simulation codes for upwelling and downwelling radiances and fluxes in the spectral range between 1.25 and 50 μm. Temperature profiles are calculated from 15 μm CO2 radiances using constraints on aerosol optical depth in this region. Surface pressure and short-wave aerosol depths are determined from 2.0 and 2.7 μm CO2 band signatures, respectively. Outstanding improvements of M.A.R.S. are discussed.
