Abstract :
An analysis was made for “a ghost like image defect” which was found in the specific OCTS (Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner) onboard ADEOS (Advanced Earth Observing Satellite) data. It is found that the defect is caused a reflection at the beam splitter of the OCTS instrument. It also found that the defect causes approximately 10% of error on the calculation of the ratio of upwelling scattering radiance due to aerosol particles in the aerosol type identification when the bands 6 and 8 of OCTS spectral channels are used while a few percent of error is observed for the bands 7 and 8. Furthermore, a relatively large defect appears in the band 6 so that it is better to use band 7 and 8 for the aerosol type identification rather than bands 6 and 8. A correction algorithm based on the convolution filtering with a Gaussain function is proposed through a characterization of the defects.
