Representations of 2x by means of first and third degree polynomials yield ex values to 6–12 and 13–15 significant figures, respectively. The full range of arguments is reached through a set of precalculated values of 2a. A Fortran implementation is shown to be much faster than the intrinsic exp function of several Fortran mathematical libraries.
