Abstract
A mathematical model of an enzyme biosensor with a multilayer charged membrane is developed. The model is reduced to a one-dimensional transmission problem for the system of second-order partial differential equations. It includes the drift-diffusion equations for reaction components and products in the membrane as well as the Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. The numerical solution algorithm is developed and applied to model performances of an enzyme biosensor for the measurement of glucose concentration in human blood. The numerical study shows that adding a charged layer to the conventional enzyme membrane significantly changes the biosensor output and can result in both increase and decrease of sensor sensitivity.
