Abstract :
Single crystals of Ce5Pb3O have been synthesized by flux growth. This compound adopts the tetragonal I4\mcm space group with lattice parameters of a = b = 8.5870(2) A and c = 14.3870(5) A, Z = 4. The crystal structure of Ce5Pb3O consists of a network of interpenetrating corner-sharing Ce-centered Pb6 octahedra and O-centered Ce4 tetrahedra. The tetrahedra are linked to each other by Pb trigonal antiprisms. Magnetization measurements show that Ce5Pb3O orders ferrimagnetically at Tc = 46 K, the second-highest known ordering temperature for any Cebased intermetallic compound
