In this issue of Chemistry & Biology, Aparicio and coworkers report that secreted bacterial cholesterol oxidase is required for the biosynthesis of the antifungal polyene pimaricin by Streptomyces natalensis . Their discovery expands the inventory of tasks this biotechnologically important enzyme performs.
