Abstract :
The paper discusses the role played by microgravity for the growth of single crystals from the vapour. Observation of the dependence of crystal homogeneity on the convective fluid flows occurring during the growth is presented; current fluid dynamic models of mass transport in the vapour phase are discussed and relevant results of computer simulations are described. The main experiments performed in microgravity conditions to date are reviewed and their results are reported. Finally, further contributions expected from microgravity research on board the International Space Station are illustrated.
