Abstract :
A comparison between the results obtained from the analytical, numerical and experimental analyses of the closed-die forging of two typical axi-symmetric components is presented in this paper. Using AutoLISP as the programming language, a general computer code was developed based on the slab method formulation. This code was used to obtain the analytical results. The model tests were conducted for the forging parts under consideration. The relevant finite-element (FE) analyses were also performed using ANSYS. When the two sets of results were compared, it was found that in some cases, the slab method’s predictions could be as reliable as the FE results, although the former method involves some simplifications and is unable to consider much detail about the process. The computational time and the software and hardware requirements for the slab method are also considerably less than the FE method.
