Strip casting of A5182 alloy using a melt drag twin-roll caster

The melt drag twin-roll caster (MDTRC) was devised for the high-speed strip casting of mushy solidification type aluminium alloys. The MDTRC enables A5182 aluminium alloy to be cast at a speed of up to 60 m/min. The MDTRC combines a low separating force, semi-solid forming at the upper side of the strip and the use of copper rolls and requires no lubricant. In addition, the MDTRC can be used to cast Al–Mg alloys having a Mg content of up to 10 mass%.
