Abstract :
This note is a direct response to Gloria Ferrariʹs article, "The Ancient Temple of the Acropolis at Athens" (AJA 106 [2002] 11–35). The analysis presented here concentrates on the blocks listed in the building block inventory IG 1^3 474 from the Athenian Acropolis: a comparative study of the inscriptional and archaeological evidence shows that the catalogued blocks are all related to the completion of the Erechtheion; therefore, the inscription cannot be used in the argument that the Old Temple of Athena, or the Dorpfeld temple, was not completely pulled down after the Persian sack of the Acropolis. The note also correlates evidence from the inscription and the extant blocks to give an indication of how the length of the Doric foot can be evaluated.
