The effect of backward extrusion on the whisker morphology of SiCw/6061Al

To analyze the effect of backward extrusion on the whisker morphology of 6061Al matrix composite reinforced by 15 vol.% SiC whisker, fabricated by the squeeze casting technique, SEM micrographs of cup-shaped components are presented and discussed. The results show that backward extrusion induces rupture and orientates the SiC whiskers. The extrusion temperature, the extrusion ratio and the shape of the male die are all important factors for the SiC whisker morphology of the final components.
