Abstract :
Die forging processes are broadly used in manufacturing both today and in ancient times. Despite this tradition from many centuries, theoretical backgrounds of these manufacturing processes has been developed at the beginning of XX century. Important meaning for this was the development of the theory of plasticity. Unfortunately, the engineers still not answered on the significant question in the area of forging-about necessity of appliance of preforming while closed die forging is performed. In present paper, the authors describe the application of a new shape complexity factor allowing to estimate the necessity of the preforming steps.
