Abstract :
This paper deals with fundamental investigations on precision forging technology of magnesium alloys. The influence of different process parameters like forming velocity, die and slug temperature on the final mechanical part properties are determined. In addition to extruded AZ31 and AZ61 material, both magnesium wrought alloys and cast materials are analysed. Furthermore, the influence of the heat treatment condition is considered. A heatable die is developed for producing model parts by lateral extrusion. The geometry of the model part enables the sampling of specimens for tensile tests and notched bar impact tests. By carrying out these tests, it is possible to analyze the influence of the process parameters on the mechanical properties of the parts. In addition, the form filling and the microstructure of the parts is investigated on the basis of micrographs. A finite element analysis is performed to predict the forging process concerning temperature distribution, form filling and forming forces. In a second step, the results are transferred to real component parts with a complex geometry. As a suitable part a pulley wheel is chosen.
