Abstract :
Commercially pure titanium and stainless steel was explosively welded by employing an interlayer of thin stainless steel. The use of an interlayer is proposed for the reduction of kinetic energy loss and the formation of intermetallic layer at the interface. Clads were prepared by varying the thickness of interlayer, loading ratio and flyer thickness. The results presented herein indicate the case that kinetic energy loss is the predominant mechanism for the formation of the intermetallic layer. The intermetallic layer associated with the thick interlayer is ascribed to the plastic flow as a consequence of the high kinetic energy loss. A feasibility study on the effect of intermetallic layer on the dynamic strength is also discussed.
