Abstract :
The present status of experimental searches for glueballs is reviewed. A critical examination is made of the criteria used in the identification of glueballs. It is concluded that the mixing of glueball states with normal View the MathML source states deprives us so far of any ‘smoking guns’, and at least two states, f0(1500) and f0(1710) remain viable contenders for the scalar (0++) glueball. It is also shown that in the proton-antiproton annihilation experiments no evidence is found for the existence of ξ(2230), the much heralded candidate for the tensor glueball.
