Abstract
Chemical studies of the transactinide elements (Z ≥ 104) at JAERI (Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute) are reviewed and prospects for extending the studies are briefly considered. Aqueous chemistry of element 104, rutherfordium (Rf), and element 105, dubnium (Db), produced in the248Cm(18O, 5n)261Rf and24m(19F, 5n)262Db reactions, respectively, has been studied by ion-exchange chromatography on an atom-at-a-time basis. Characteristic ion-exchange behavior of Rf and Db in acidic solution is discussed.
