Abstract :
This paper examines the mechanical properties of rod flame sprayed coatings in the system Al2O3–TiO2–ZrO2. Free-standing thin coatings were tested and a new approach for their preparation was used and assessed in terms of absolute values of bending strength and their standard deviation in comparison with published values for ceramic systems. The Youngʹs modulus shows distinct non-linear behavior. The presence of particle-, micro crack- and/or transformation toughening mechanisms can be seen by comparing mechanical properties of pure alumina- with zirconia containing coatings.
