Abstract :
A comment on the short communication entitled “Synthesis and emission analysis of RE3+ (Eu3+ or Dy3+):Li2TiO3 ceramics” (Kumar and Buddhudu, Ceram. Int. 35 (2009) 521–525) is given. The authors gave the wrong XRD patterns of Eu3+ or Dy3+:Li2TiO3 powders and got the wrong conclusion that Dy3+:Li2TiO3 was brightly luminescent. Our experiments found that, the main phase of Dy3+:β-Li2TiO3 powders prepared by the solid state reaction method, was β-Li2TiO3 containing Dy2Ti2O7, and the powders were not brightly luminescent. The main reason was that Dy2Ti2O7 was formed by the reaction of Dy2O3 with β-Li2TiO3, resulting in that Dy3+ did not enter into the crystal lattice of β-Li2TiO3.
