Abstract :
An angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction study was performed on the Fe–Sn intermetallic compounds FeSn2, FeSn, and Fe3Sn to a pressure of 25 GPa using nitrogen as a pressure-transmitting medium and gold as a pressure marker. The samples were prepared with phase purities of more than 97%. These intermetallics show no phase transition to the highest pressure achieved. Our data fitted to the Birch–Murnaghan equation of state yield: View the MathML sourceK0=86(2)GPa for FeSn2, View the MathML sourceK0=94(2)GPa for FeSn, and View the MathML sourceK0=122(3)GPa for Fe3Sn. The c/a ratio increases with pressure for FeSn2 and Fe3Sn but decreases for FeSn.
