Unusual iron-mediated C–N bond formation and synthesis of the Fe(III) complex of a polypyridine ligand with one carboxamide group

A high-spin iron(III) chloro complex [(PaPPy3)Fe(Cl)](ClO4) (1, where image=N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine-N-propyl-2-pyridine-2-carboxamide) has been synthesized via the “template effect” and structurally characterized. The template reaction leads to the formation of a new carbon–nitrogen bond from coupling of a primary alkyl chloride with a secondary amine.
