Abstract :
The adoption of Augmented Reality (AR) in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry will be facilitated by quantifiably demonstrating the benefits of AR in tasks with AR prototypes. Having identified inspection as one of the promising AR application areas in industrial construction in a previous study on the suitability of AR technologies, the authors now detail the development of their AR prototype system for steel column inspection, the ARCam. The detailed technical methods for the operation of the ARCam are discussed, as are developments required for field application that were revealed through the development of the ARCam. The required developments are not limited to the ARCam, but also provide the general prerequisites for AR systems for construction sites. Achieving the required developments should enable AR to be applied in construction sites more practically and effectively.
