Abstract
The infrared (IR) spectra of binary silver thioborate xAg2S + (1 − x)B2S3 glasses (0.3⩽x⩽0.56) and ternary zAgI + (1 − z) [0.5Ag2S + 0.5B2S3] glasses (0⩽z⩽0.3) are reported. The structure of the binary glasses changes with an increase in modifier content as observed by a monotonic decrease in the fraction of tetrahedrally coordinated boron units and an increase in the fraction of orthothioborate units. This reduction in four coordinated boron and increase in tri-coordinated orthothioborate boron units has been seen in the alkali thioborates and analogous silver borate glasses. The structure of the ternary glasses shows little to no change in the IR spectra with an increase in AgI (z) up to 30 mol%. This result agrees with previous studies performed on alkali thioborate and silver borate glasses.
