Approximating small and large amplitude periodic orbits of the oscillator

It is shown that the oscillator x ¨ + ( 1 + x ˙ 2 ) x = 0 is conservative and scaling laws for the period for small and large amplitude vibrations are derived. Analytical approximations of the periodic orbits are also constructed and these show excellent agreement with numerical solutions.
