Abstract :
Methods for detecting and discriminating volatile organic compounds emitted by statutory pathogens in potato tubers are reported. Analyses were performed utilising headspace solid phase microextraction gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC–MS). Principal component analysis of the data highlights the difference in volatile profiles of infected tubers and their controls. An instrument was developed comprising an automated SPME sampler and 8-metal oxide sensor array and was demonstrated to be capable of identification of infected material.
