Abstract
If the theory of the sampling of broken material (TOS) can hardly be mentioned without direct reference to Gyʹs lifetime fundamental contributions, it can neither be fully understood outside of a geostatistical frame of reference. TOS calls for geostatistical concept at small scale (Gyʹs formula), mixes with it at medium scale (sampling regime of one-dimensional flows), and is very much needed by larger scale geostatistics (data quality in view of estimation, conditional simulations). After a brief introduction of geostatistics and its more relevant concepts and tools, this intimate link is reviewed in more details at the three abovementioned scales.
