Abstract :
A series of wind tunnel tests were conducted on Korean high-speed train models using various moving ground simulation techniques. A moving belt system of the Flow Science wind tunnel and a multiple-slot tangential blowing system built in KARI wind tunnel were used to compare the characteristics of the ground simulation techniques. Two models of different scales were tested for several train configurations by modifying the number of cars and bogie fairings, shape of nose and inter-car, and location of cavity on the roof of power car. The results show that the tangential blowing system with multiple slots could be an alternative ground simulation technique for a long train model. We discussed the effects of shape components on drag and provided a useful guideline for the reduction of the aerodynamic drag of high-speed trains.
