Buffering in Models of Integrated Biochemical Systems

Buffers are a standard tool in biochemistry, yet they have not been used explicitly in models of biochemical systems. We propose simple mathematical modules that provide buffering action against undesired fluctuations in marginal system variables. The results demonstrate that the inclusion of these “buffer boxes” is effective. Buffer boxes can be designed so that they do not alter steady-state values of the system. However, depending on the form of the buffer, formerly unstable systems can be stabilized. Buffer boxes do not unduly increase computational cost.
