Abstract :
We present almost complete computations of the surgery obstruction for 3-manifolds, as well as consequences for a suitable version of the structure set in dimension three. Applications leading to new results and conjectures concerning the Borel conjecture in dimension ⩾5 and UNil-groups are also discussed.
