Counting the regular coverings of surfaces using the center of a group algebra

We obtain a formula for the number of classes of regular branched coverings of compact surfaces. The formula gives the number of coverings with a fixed automorphism group G and a determined type of branching data in terms of algebraic operations in the center of the group algebra of G .
