Abstract
This study illustrates how randomness can be incorporated into a framework of computational failure mechanics. The necessity of a regularised continuum description is discussed along with the algorithmic aspects of the evaluation of the sensitivity of the mechanical response to the material parameters. Perturbation and reliability methods are used to study the statistical properties of the evolution of damage and the importance of failure modes with respect to the boundary conditions, the material properties and the geometry.
